I've been to Nicosia before, back in 2013, so a few spots I revisited whilst I was here in September still had the same feeling all those years back. Eery in some parts as you could see the bullet holes in the buildings. Nicosia is a city in Cyprus with a very poignant history. Back in 1974, a war broke out between the Turkish and the Greeks that resulted in many having to flee their homes, which still hold the family belongings which they cannot return to collect. The war was so bad that the UN stepped in and divided a green zone all the way through Cyprus, some areas/towns being a complete no-go zone where either side cannot return (Famagusta). This line cut straight through Nicosia and remains to be the only divided city in the world. You need your passport to cross the border (which I forgot mine!) that is still manned by UN officials and they will tell you off for photographing/filming certain things (I was told off for filming along the wall, so I quickly put the camera down). As you can see, there is still a lot of political tension from locals and discussing with locals about the war or the divide is not advised, but explore the city as it has some kind people (Visit the Afaia Gallery), beautiful buildings, fantastic museums and interesting graffiti!

TIPS:
- Bring your passport to travel through to either side, you will not be able to cross without it.
- If you are a student, bring your ID card, it will give you access either for free or discounted when visiting the many museums around the city!
