(2 Oct 2020) Hundreds of Catalan independence supporters took the streets of Barcelona on Thursday evening to mark the third anniversary of a disputed independence referendum that challenged the Spanish government in Madrid and caused a national crisis.
Protesters gathered in a square in front of the Catalan regional government building holding flags and criticizing separatists politicians for failing to effectively split from Spain.
They then walked to the Plaza Catalunya where they burn't rubbish bins and clashed with police.
Fifteen people were detained and one police officer was injured according to the Mossos D'Esquadra, the regional police.
More protests were held in towns across Catalonia, a region of 7.5 million people.
The anniversary comes after only a few days since Spain's Supreme Court ruled Monday to bar regional president Quim Torra from office after he disobeyed the country's electoral law by hanging a banner that called for the release of imprisoned separatist leaders on a public building before the 2019 elections.
Still, turnout this year was lower than in previous years following a loss of momentum and faith for the independence movement.
The pandemic has also had an impact.
