Established in 1987, this award recognizes a world language educator who has demonstrated excellence in the preparation and continuing education of teachers for the profession.
The 2021 recipient is Martha Nyikos of Indiana University, Bloomington.
“I am sincerely honored to accept the Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education from ACTFL. Throughout my career, ACTFL has guided me with cutting-edge ideas and professional contacts both as a classroom teacher, and now as a teacher educator here at Indiana University, Bloomington.
I accept this award in the name of all language teacher educators, but moreover, for all the classroom teachers who mentor our preservice teachers, giving them the transformative experience to become their best aspirational teacher selves. Their optimism is our greatest force multiplier for the future!
As a heritage speaker and a child of refugees, I’d like to stress the need to actively foster indigenous and heritage languages, especially in this time of crisis among refugees.
And finally, I share this honor with my wonderful mentors at the Universities of Indiana, Pittsburgh, Purdue, and Minnesota’s CARLA institute who have buoyed me up and carried me forward—thank you!”
