One of the oldest and most famous Japanese folktales, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter (also known as The Tale of Princess Kaguya), tells the story of a bamboo cutter who finds a tiny, glowing girl inside a bamboo stalk. He and his wife raise her, and she grows into a beautiful woman, known as Kaguya-hime. Many suitors come to ask for her hand in marriage, but she sets them impossible tasks.
