Definition:
A mental shortcut that relies on immediate examples that comes to a given person's mind when evaluating a specific topic, concept, method or decision.
The availability heuristic operates on the notion that if something can be recalled, it must be important, or at least more important than alternative solutions which are not as readily recalled.
Example:
Are there more English words that start with a K or more words with K as their third letter?
The answer is that there are more than twice as many English words have K in third position than start with a K.
Most people believe the opposite is true because we can think of words beginning with a K more quickly. They are more available to our memory.
