Box turtles are omnivores and they’re opportunistic feeders as well. Live prey makes up a large part of their natural diet but in captivity, keepers often ignore this by taking the easy way out. Throwing them commercial turtle or tortoise pellets and fruit is pretty effortless and takes little time. The problem is when we do just that, the turtles not only miss out on much needed nutrients but they also lose the ability to exhibit naturalistic behaviors. Box turtles are predators! They hunt down prey in the form of worms, snails, slugs, roaches and other invertebrates regularly. This is something they must be allowed to under managed care, as well. In nature, they spend hours every day during the active season tearing apart the forest floor where these tasty items hide. Like Godzilla destroying a city, box turtles of all kinds bulldoze through leaf litter, pine needles, mud and vegetation to locate, kill and consume their favorite buggy snacks.
