When the Mercedes-AMG GT was introduced, it replaced the SLS and was the flagship of the brand. Now that car is no longer in production, leaving behind only the 4-door version of it. But this AMG GT doesn’t share a whole lot of components with the flagship car. It actually shares the same platform as the Mercedes E-class and the CLS-class. So should you pay the extra money for the slightly different styling or is there more to this car?
In the past, the AMG GT 4-door was available with the monstrous twin-turbocharged V8 that is in a lot of AMG 63 models. For 2022, that engine is gone. At least for the time being. It may return once Mercedes gets their microchip supply chain in order. Here in Canada, the GT 4-door is only available in 53 guise which means that it has a 3.0L turbocharged inline-6 with a mild-hybrid system. The total output of this GT53 AMG version is 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque (320 kW & 520 Nm).
Paired with the engine is a 9-speed automatic transmission. In Comfort mode, the shifts feel seamless, both when going up and when going down through the gears. The swaps between gears is much more evident in Sport+ and Race modes but I think that was done intentionally by the engineers to provide a sense of connection with the car.
The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT53 4MATIC+ 4-door Coupe is not cheap. It has a price tag that is as long as its name. The GT53 starts at $123,900 CAD ($102,600 USD) with this demo vehicle being equipped to $158,700 CAD ($127,500 USD). It should be noted that the US market does not have this MANUFAKTUR package which costs $25,000 CAD. In the United States, there is also a GT43 version of this car with a starting price of $92,500 USD.
