Trees work together to grow, flourish, and avoid threats. They do this through a vast and intricate network of hair-thin fungal filaments called mycorrhiza, just a few inches beneath the soil surface. In addition to communicating alarm and distress, trees are also able to share life-saving nutrients to keep each other alive. This network is a lifeline for young saplings in fully shaded parts of a forest, as bigger trees pump sugar, water, and other lifesaving resources into their roots. Mycelium is an important reminder of community- even trees take care of each other!
