This video is a look at some laughing gyms. This species is Gymnopilus luteofolius, and was found growing on a pine log. In all of my time mushroom hunting and foraging, this is the first time I've come across this species!
This video is for educational and entertainment purposes only. I wish to show some pretty footage of a nice mushroom while talking about taxonomy. I am not promoting the use of hallucinogenic mushrooms, nor will I provide any information on their cultivation. Possessing and intentionally growing certain species of mushrooms is illegal in most US states. This is a wild specimen.
This species is not recommended for consumption due to its psilocybin content. This species, along with other Gymnopilus species can be easily confused with species of Galerina. That could be a deadly mistake. For that reason, please check with an expert and use multiple references if you wish to positively identify any new mushroom species.
This species, Gymnopilus luteofolius, can be darker colored and is often more a vibrant pink purple color with a scaly cap. This patch was a bit bleached by some full sun and a little rough looking.
