In 2012, AICPA and CIMA joined hands and launched a new designation known as CGMA, mostly targeted to the AICPA members who do not practice public accounting, as well as CIMA members who want to get a more US-centric qualification. The question is, does it pretty much replace the US CMA certification? How does one compare the two, should we get either one or both?
In this video, we compare CGMA and CMA in terms of background, current status and potential. We also discuss the format of the exam. For CMA, the exam format is very established with two parts that can be taken 6 months out of 12 months of each year. The questions comprise of multiple choice questions and two essays. The CGMA exam format is not familiar with candidates especially those who are used to the American exam system. It looks a lot more like the CIMA exam (in fact, it is developed by CIMA) in the form of in-depth case studies. There are materials that candidates should read and prepare for the exam. We don’t have as much transparency of the CGMA exam and so far there hasn’t been a review course commercially available for this exam. We’ll wait and see how the CGMA exam develops. In the meantime, if you have questions, feel free to drop us a note in the comment section below.
