Sergei Bortkiewicz’s compositions style was largely based on Romanticism, drawn from composers such as Liszt, Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. Since his works considered ‘old-fashioned’ and ‘behind-time’, they are forgotten by modern pianists and audiences. However, these works are worthy of performance even though his compositions were often overshadowed by contemporaries in musical history, because of their attractive melodies. The Quatre Morceaux (Four Pieces), Op 65, published in 1947, are the last known surviving works by Bortkiewicz. The third piece, Épithalame (Wedding Song) is dedicated to Rudolf Horn who lost his right arm during World War I.
