Happy New Year! New Years is a time for celebration and a great time to make resolutions. Actually, you can make resolutions any time. This year, I am focusing on becoming a better parent. This is something that all parents can do, as no one is perfect. My plan is to focus on two main areas, communication and rewards. Being more clear in communication helps any relationship as it builds a better understanding of each other. Rewards are better than punishment, as the reinforce positive behaviors and when used appropriately are much more effective.

Communication can be difficult. There are times where you feel like you are being very clear. By providing more clear expectations there is less room for misunderstanding, and if give the child a better opportunity to meet your expectations.

Rewards is another tricky one. Toys and gifts are always fun, but it could lead to expectations that the child will get a fight every time. I have found that using gifts has led to my son acting a bit spoiled. Food is another tricky one. It may not be the healthiest decision to use food as rewards. Plus in my house, I am sure my son would choose to go to McDonald’s every time. One of the things that we have used before that my son loves is that I give him the opportunity to make up a game and he gets to create all the rules. He loves having official control. I am hoping to utilize this a lot more in 2021
