Located anywhere in the front midline part of the neck, a thyroglossal duct cyst can develop at any point in person’s life, even well into adulthood. Surgical removal requires excising not only the cystic mass itself, but also any tract that may emanate above or below it. Failure to remove the tract results in a high risk for recurrence. Known as the Sistrunk Procedure, thorough tract excision may require removal of the middle third of the hyoid bone as well as the middle segment of the thyroid gland.
