How to control Fall Armyworm naturally?
Fall armyworm is a devastating insect pest of Maize crop. It is very difficult to handle this pest with any single method, more so with chemical pesticides. It requires an adept combination of a variety of measures operated in a focused and well directed manner. Dr Ramanaidu Ekalavya Foundation KVK, Tuniki, Medak evaluated different methods of natural and biological methods and achieved decent success. Filling the whorls with non-toxic materials like soil, sand, rock dust, wood ash, saw dust, paddy husk etc. had helped in protecting the maize crop against fall armyworm. Wetting the filled material in the whorls with 5% NSKE or Agni-astram is even more effective. Using biological agents like Metarhizium, Bacillus thuringenesis (Bt) and Entomo-pathogenic Nematodes (EPN) are very effective in preventing cob damage. Non-chemical methods helped in conserving the natural enemy populations besides avoiding pesticide residues in human, cattle and poultry food and feed, respectively.
