Traditional fishing and the fishing industry transformed a small seaside village into a world-renowned town. Due to vast quantities of fish, commercial fishing began in the early 20th century and with its rapid development the population of Izola increased drastically. The fish processing plant and a large fishing fleet created jobs and opportunities for further development, but it all suddenly came to a halt with Slovenia’s independence, the loss of fishing grounds and the dwindling of fish stocks. Nowadays, only a few small groups of fishermen fish in these waters, reminding us of the once majestic fleet. Still, fishing left a strong mark that can be still perceived in every corner of the town of Izola.
