What is chest HRCT test?
HRCT Scan Chest means HRCT (High Resolution Computed Tomography) scan of the chest. It is a type of CT scan, in which detailed images of the lungs are produced using X-ray radiation. Both CT scan of the chest and HRCT produce very fine cross-sectional images! However, HRCT has much clearer images than a CT scan! Apart from this, the resolution (in a way quality) of the images is also very high, which way a doctor or radiologist can easily detect the error!
Why is HRCT of the chest done?
HRCT is performed in people who have signs and symptoms of interstitial lung disease. As:-
• Dry cough
• Difficulty in breathing
• Fatigue Weight Loss
How is HRCT of the chest done?
• The person will be asked to lie down on the table of the CT scan machine.
• You may first be asked to lie on your back, during which both hands should be straight above the head
• You will then be asked to lie down on your stomach!
• Before starting the scanning process, the technologist will operate the machine from another room nearby, they can talk to you via the intercom, during which time if you feel uncomfortable let them know!
• In this test the lungs are to be examined, so the technologist will guide you to inhale, exhale and hold your breath.
• Will give directions to!
• Now the table will go inside the machine and create tons of images!
• This test can take around 15 minutes to half an hour!
What are the risks and benefits of chest HRCT?
• There is no pain during this test. It does not take much time and the results obtained from it are accurate.
• In this, a detailed and clear picture is obtained of the internal parts of the body without surgery.
• There is no radiation left in the body after the scan is complete.
Who cannot do HRCT of chest?
• It is generally not recommended for pregnant women, as X-ray radiation can harm the unborn baby.
