Armed Forces Modernisation proposals worth Rs 84,328cr in detail
On 22nd December the Ministry of Defence has given AoN for Rs 84,328cr for the modernization of Indian Armed forces. We have made a video last night and it was quick one where we missed few details. Therefore, in this video we will cover all proposals in detail.
AoN has been given for 24 Capital Acquisition Proposals. These proposals include six for Indian Army, six for IAF, 10 for Indian Navy & two proposals for Indian Coast Guard. The government is focused on Make-in-India for 21 projects worth Rs 82,127 Crs (97.4%) to be procured from indigenous sources.
AoN for Indian Army
First, we will look into the big-ticket items for Indian Army. The AoN has been given for three big platforms: first one is 354 light tanks for Rs 17,500 crore, second one is 300 mounted gun systems for Rs 7,500 crore and third one is 480 futuristic infantry combat vehicles (FICVs) for Rs 20,000 crore. Apart from these big-ticket items approval has also been for 80,000 ballistic helmets with enhanced protection levels for frontline soldiers.
AoN for Air Force
Now, let’s talk about Indian Air force. Earlier we have reported that IAF is preparing proposal for Rs 1400 crore for NGARM or Rudram-I anti-radiation missiles which has been approved by DAC. The other items approved for IAF includes Long Range Guided Bombs, Range Augmentation Kit for conventional bombs and advanced surveillance systems. The approval of guided bombs and range augmentation kit is good move as it will boost the IAF’s stand-off strike capability at much lower cost as the guidance kit can covert the cheap unguided bombs into a precision strike weapon.
AoN for Navy
Talking about Indian Navy, the approvals have been given for the procurement of Naval Anti-Ship Missiles. This is very important development from the perspective of Indian Navy & DRDO as it proves that the NASM missile development is near completion or completed. The first reported trial of NASM missile was reported on 18th May 2022 from a seaking helicopter. The NASM is a short-range air launched anti-ship missile. It has range between 5-55km. DRDO is working on its future version which are: NASM-MR (Medium Range) & NASM-LR (Long Range). NASM-SR being developed will be integrated MH-60R, Sea King and ALH MK-III helicopters.
The other items approved for Indian Navy includes Multi-Purpose Vessels and High Endurance Autonomous Vehicles. These two vessels are new platform which worth discussing.
L&T Multi-Purpose Vessels
Talking about MPV, this vessel has been offered by L&T. The vessel is being designed to undertake maritime surveillance, patrolling, search & rescue mission.
DRDO's HEAUV
The next vessel worth discussing is High Endurance Autonomous Vehicles. Yesterday, DAC has given AoN for this vessel for the Navy. These will be unmanned vessels which will have the capability to detect underwater mines and can be used for mine counter measures. They can be used for ISR missions. If integrated with SONAR, they can also be used to detect submarines.
Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels for ICG & Costal Vessel for GSI
The procurement of Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels for Indian Coast Guard has also been approved.
Apart from these, On 22nd December, the government of Indian has given go-ahead to a proposal by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) to purchase two coastal vessels costing Rs 245.07 crore. The induction of these vessels will increase the exploration activities of GSI in the marine sphere which has huge resources of heavy minerals within the territorial waters of the east and west coast of the country.
