Anna Maria Island is a barrier island on Florida’s Gulf Coast located between St Petersburg and Sarasota. Once a best-kept secret among Floridians, Anna Maria Island has always been known for its sugar-white beach coastline, emerald green and blue Gulf waters and quaint business districts. Today, it is known as a vacation favorite among local, national and international travelers.
In September-October 2024, Anna Maria Island received significant damage from hurricanes Helene and Milton. With hurricane Helene, 100% of single-family homes on the island were flooded with 3–4 feet of water. The storm surge also destroyed resorts, tore apart cottages, and filled pools with sand.
Hurricane Milton caused strong winds, rain, and storm surges, especially in low-lying coastal areas. The storm damaged the Anna Maria City Pier and the Rod & Reel Pier. It also destroyed sand dunes, ruined lifeguard towers, and sent up to 5 feet of sand into local buildings. The island's economy was significantly disrupted.
In December 2024 we came to check out the current situation on the island. Many businesses are open now and the beach is in almost perfect condition. However, many beachfront properties still need extensive repairs.
