In ancient times, the Earth was struck by a severe drought, and the gods decided that the celestial river Ganga must descend to save the world. However, the force of Ganga's descent threatened to destroy the Earth. To prevent this, Lord Shiva offered his divine body, capturing Ganga in his matted locks (jata) and releasing her gently in streams. These streams formed multiple rivers, bringing life and prosperity to the land.
