Every year the Spanish city of Valencia hosts a week-long celebration that culminates on Saint Joseph's day (March 19), the city's patron saint day.
The "fallas" fiestas are some of Europe's most famous festivals.
STORYLINE:
Daytime fireworks, famous for their intense noise, echoed across Valencia's city centre during the annual Fallas festival.
The "Mascleta" is an audio and visual fireworks' display that takes place every day at noon in front of the town hall during the festival.
One crucial part of the festivities is the the preparation and consumption of huge quantities of the region's most famous dish, paella.
The story of paella began in the autonomous region of Valencia, when the Moors introduced rice cultivation to the marshlands surrounding its capital (of the same name) during the 8th or 9th century.
But the highlight of the fiesta is the burning of the grotesque gigantic papier mache figures.
Fallas is the culmination of the work and effort of an entire year.
The 'ninots' and 'fallas' are the expression of a unique kind of art using large wooden structures covered with painted papier-mache or more recently polystyrene.
The 'ninots' are comic representations of popular or topical personalities.
The 'fallas' are larger creations based on themes reflecting local, provincial, national and even international topics.
Today over 600 fallas are mounted throughout the city from the start of the festival on March 15.
Almost every street corner has its own falla and some are as tall as twenty metres (66 feet).
