It seems that with the passage of the 26th Amendment, the process for appointing the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) has shifted from the president automatically selecting the most senior Supreme Court judge to requiring a recommendation from a Special Parliamentary Committee (SPC). This change in procedure has led to the nomination of Justice Yahya Afridi as the next CJP, despite Justice Mansoor Ali Shah being the senior-most judge according to the previous rules.
CJP Qazi Faez Isa is set to retire on October 25, and Justice Afridi is expected to take the oath on Saturday, marking the first time this new process is being implemented under the amended constitution.
