Amazing Facts You Didn't Know About Fin whales! Whale Size Comparison. Animals Life
The fin whale is a member of the striped whale family. It is a close relative of the blue whale and the second largest animal on the planet.
According to the 2006 report, there are two known subspecies of fin whales, differing in appearance and sound: the North Atlantic fin whale and the Antarctic fin whale. Most experts agree that a third, of the North Pacific fin whale subspecies, exists. In general, these three groups are rarely mixed.
Adults in the Northern Hemisphere reach a length of 18 to 24 meters; in the Southern Hemisphere, fin whales are somewhat larger, being 20 to 27 meters in length. Unlike most other whale species, female fin whales are larger than males but weigh about the same - 40 to 70 tons. The fin whale is much slimmer and lighter than the blue whale, whose length is not inferior. The fin whale weighs even less than some shorter whale species, such as the bowhead and sperm whale.
The back of fin whales is dark gray or dark brown, and the belly and underside of the fins are white. Fin whales can be identified by the asymmetric distribution of colors in the front part of the body: the lower jaw is white on the right and dark color on the left.
