Lee Miller's study of herself in Hitler's bathtub, Ansel Adams's "Winter Sunrise on the Sierra Nevada", Margaret Bourke-White's "Liberation of Buchenwald" are photos you can never forget. But this compendium of visionary photography also includes the sufferings and lives of everyday people, for instance two terrified women in "Tenement Fire, Harlem, 1942" by the news photographer Weegee, who had a police radio in the back of his car and notoriously hurried eagerly to every scene of crime and disaster. Soweto of the 1970s is the setting for two men clinging to the running board of a moving train, snapped by Peter Magubane. In Brassai's study of Picasso holding up one of his sculptures the artist looks almost terrified of its totemic face, while Richard Avedon's controversial scarred portrait of David Hockney hints at deep disturbances in the artist's mind. The cruelty of war is a perennial subject, and Shome Tomatsu's "Bottle Melted and Deformed by Atomic Bomb Heat" looks like the twisted body of a person or animal, while Robert Capa's "American Soldier Killed by German Snipers, 1945", provides an incongruously elegant domestic context for the brutal scene. Helen Levitt, a pupil of Cartier Bresson, believed that photos did not have to have a meaning, and her study of young children in New York wearing masks illustrates the surrealistic elusiveness of her oeuvre. Gordon Parks on the other hand believed that the camera could be "a weapon against poverty, against racism, against all sorts of social wrongs" and his shot of an elegantly dressed black mother and daughter underneath a sign "Colored Entrance" for Life Magazine in 1956 vividly illustrates his social engagement. Featured photographers include Atget, Stieglitz, Kertesz, Moholy-Nagy, McCullin, Ruscha, Leibovitz, Brandt and many others with mini biogs and timelines. An inspirational collection. 312pp, 7¾" x 11½", softback, reproductions on every page in glossy colour and black and white.
