After 13 hard years my old Minn Kota trolling motor finally gave up the ghost. After diligently researching I finally decided to go with the cheaper hand steer. My old trolling motor was foot controlled. So this change was not taken lightly.
One of the best things about a foot controlled trolling motor is no hands. You can keep both hands free for casting. It can be easily controlled by a momentary on off switch.
A hand steered trolling motor has advantages as well. You don’t have a large foot pedal taking up room on your deck. There are no exposed switches to corrode. A foot steered trolling motor is better suited to someone sitting. I always stand when I am fishing. When the waves are up it makes it more complicated to keep your balance. The only negative aspect that I can come up with is you will not always have both hands free.
One of the largest advantages that I have found for a hand controlled motor is reverse. Often I get hung up in brush. When I go in close to get my lure or jigs I have to back out. A foot steered motor swings the motor head 180 degrees. Often right into brush. When this happens you have no choice but to raise the trolling motor up by hand. Holding it just below the water to get yourself back into open water.
The choice is yours and my opinions are mine. Not everyone may have the same experiences as myself. Trolling motors may work better on some boat than others. Thus leading someone to a different opinion. I hope that this video will help you make up your own mind on which option is best for you.
