The United Paramount Network aka UPN launched on January 16,1995 with two nights of programming beginning with the first episode of Star Trek:Voyager with the announcer says “Welcome to The First Night for the First Network for The Next Century. UPN”. Many of the stations that had the UPN Affiliation when UPN launched were owned by either United Television in markets like Los Angeles, New York, Portland, San Francisco and Phoenix or owned by Paramount Stations Group in areas like Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Washington D.C and San Antonio. UPN was a joint venture between Chris Craft and Paramount Pictures in which 50% of UPN was owned by United Television and the other 50% of UPN was owned by Paramount. The opening was shown shortly before the airing of the 1st and 2nd Episode/Two Hour Series Premiere of the 1st Season of Star Trek:Voyager “Caretaker” which aired January 16,1995 on then UPN Affiliate WSBK 38 in Boston,Massachusetts. WSBK would revert back to an independent station on September 16,2006 which lasted until September 19,2011 when it took the MyNetworkTV affiliation which lasted until September 19,2022 when it reverted back to an independent station for the second time which it currently is an independent station. Shoutout to TVARCHIVES for this footage since it came from a commercial break on UPN’s first night January 16,1995 on WSBK UPN 38.

*PS During the first six months of UPN, WSBK used the TV 38 branding they used since 1977, it was also the same time that New World Communications (which made a deal with FOX Broadcasting in May 1994 to have its stations end their affiliations with ABC,CBS or NBC and switch to FOX) sold WSBK to Paramount Stations Group. In June 1995 WSBK rebranded as UPN 38, the following year WSBK became a UPN Owned and Operated Station shortly after Viacom acquired a 50% ownership stake in UPN. Like many stations with the UPN Affiliation, WSBK was still a de-facto independent station airing movies and shows on first run syndication as well as off network syndication on nights where UPN didn’t offer any Primetime Programming.
