Yesterday afternoon, thousands of firefighters and emergency workers from across North America gathered in an immense display of gratitude in Montréal, Canada. Fallen firefighter Pierre Lacroix was honored and given full military funeral service following the tragic events of last October 17th. On that tragic evening, Pierre Lacroix along with three of his colleagues from the SIM at station 64 intervened in the white river rapids of the Lachine Canal. Their fireboat capsized: [ Ссылка ] as they were in the process of helping stranded boaters approaching the dangerous and powerful rapids. The four men were thrown into the frigid waters from which only three were immediately rescued by another nearby fireboat. The victim, veteran of 20 years of the Sécurité Incendie de Montréal fire dept was found deceased the day after. A devastated community has since been grieving the early loss of soon to be retired highly experienced and regarded fireman and father. After having saved countless lives throughout his carrier, Pierre Lacroix then ultimately sacrificed his own to save two strangers being the true definition of hero. An estimated 3000 people took part in the emotional and grandiose ceremony yesterday held at the Basilique Notre-Dame in the Vieux Port sector of Montréal. The Mayor of the city Me Valérie Plante attended the homage along with fire and police chiefs from several services. Such a tragedy is a rare occurrence as the last time a firefighter was lost in the line of duty in the province of Québec was nearly ten years ago.
