West Virginia lawmakers have impeached all four state Supreme Court justices — including a suspended justice facing a 23-count federal indictment — for spending issues on Monday night. The extraordinary move impacts West Virginia state Supreme Court justices Robin Davis, Allen Loughry, Beth Walker and Margaret Workman. Tuesday, just hours after the impeachment decision, Davis, a Democrat, announced her retirement. She called the impeachment a travesty of justice and an unabashed move by one branch of government to take over another. Davis, while announcing her departure at the state Capitol, said West Virginia citizens would now 'be afforded their constitutional right to elect my successor in November.' Any of the three remaining justices who were impeached and considering stepping down would have to do so by the end of the business day Tuesday, the deadline for retiring in time for their replacement to be decided in a special election this November.
