When the Clones were first introduced to us back in Episode 2, many believed that they were very similar to droids. They were totally obedient, regimented lethal warriors. However, over the twenty years since the attack of the clones release, we have come to realise that, despite the genetic and psychological meddling of the Kaminoans, Clones were still very much human. And this included their desire to mate.
Much to the Kaminoan's dismay, this would have some unforeseen consequences including the impregnation of a Jedi Padawan.
Unfortunately for the Kaminoans, they were unable to remove this troublesome attribute known to them as Factor H, an urge deeply embedded within the human psyche. At first the Kaminons experimented with sterile clones. However, they realized that this only led to decreased productivity, decreased aggressiveness and decreased unit cohesion.
Obviously, the Kaminoans did not want their cloine army to suffer from such diffcecioes. However, being the perfectionist fascist aliens that they were, the Kaminoans decided to terminate the batch, claiming that factor H was a negative trait that had to be eliminated.
However, this termination of the Clone Trooper project was stopped by none other thanJango Fett himself. Jango was well aware of male humans desire to reproduce. Afterall, his sole payment for the Clone army had been his son, Boba Fett.
He argued, that this lack of sterilization would only make the clones stronger, more aggressive and more motivated. Throughout history, both in the galaxy far far away and here on earth, millions of men have answered the call of war, hoping to become a war hero worthy of a womans love.
And so, for better or worse, the clones were left unsterilised. To prevent unwanted offsprint, the Kaminoans advised strict measures and protocols. This included preventing Clones from having too much contact with females as well as channelling the energy from Factor H into team-building exercises. Buy and large, factor H would not be a problem. However, this would change when some Clones met another celibate and sensually frustrated group, the Jedi.
As we all know, the Jedi were not allowed to form attachments and intercourse was certainly frowned upon. However, just like the clones, many Jedi could not fight their human urges. While Anakin Skywalker is perhaps the most famous example, he certainly was not alone. Etain Tur-Mukan and RC-1136 were one such example.
The pair met during the height of the Clone Wars. Etain was young Padawan thrust into the horrors of war. RC-1136 was an ambitious Clone Commando from Omega squad with little experience with women.
However during a mission, Etain would come into contact with the clone commandos of Omega Squad. Darman and Etain, soon realised that they worked well together and the pair would grow closer to one another. Etain came to realise that the Republic and many of the Jedi were wrong about the Clones. They were not just expendable units. They were in fact humans with emotions and feelings.
Etain experienced force visions of a child while with Omega squadron. While this confused her at first, she would soon come to realise what this meant.
Later on, Etain and Darman would become more than friends. Darman would succumb to that pesky Factor h that the Kaminoans had tried so hard to get rid of. Now pregnant, Etain became fearful of who to tell. After all, the Grand Army of the Republic and The Jedi would l;ikely have reacted very negatively to the news, perhaps putting the child at risk. Instead she told Kal Skirata, a mandalorian who had helped train the Clone Commandos on Kamino. He told her not to inform Darman that he was in fact the father, instead of allowing her to introduce the child to Darman and Omega Squad as his grandson.
After noting that Darman seemed nervous around the child, she casually asked Darman his thoughts about children and what he would name one, to which he responded Kad, meaning saber in the mandalorian language. However, Not knowing he was the father nor that she was the mother, he told Etain that war was no time to have a child. Distraught, Etain decided that now was not the time to tell Darman the boys true parentage.
Many months later on Coruscant, Etain decided that it would be best if she left the Jedi Order. It was here that she told Darman that he was the father. Although he was initially angry that she had withheld this from him, he eventually calmed down, and the three spent several days together on Coruscant.
Many say love can overcome anything. And maybe they’re right as Darman seemed to be somewhat unaffected by Order 66. In fact after Order 66 had already been executed, Darman asked Etain to marry him over comlink.
