Every 28 days of steaming the boiler on every steam loco has to be washed out and inspected.

This allows the boiler to be inspected for any problems and also washes out any sludge and sediments that build inside the boiler from minerals contained in the water, the water treatment compounds (used to maintain the pH level and TDS level of the water) and rust from the boiler itself.

It a boiler is not washed out at regular time intervals the boiler can suffer from priming and/or foaming of the water that can cause damage to the locos cylinders and safety valves.
