Mumbai's famous Vada Pav, a beloved street food, originates from the 1960s when South Indian idli and dosa stalls were widespread in the city.
Balasaheb Thackeray's Shiv Sena was emerging, and despite Mumbai's Marathi identity, South Indian menus dominated. Shiv Sena encouraged Marathi locals to set up their own food stalls.
Ashok Vaidya, a Marathi entrepreneur, responded by launching a stall at Dadar station. He introduced Vada Pav by placing a vada inside a pav (bread roll) from a nearby omelette stall. This innovative snack became an instant sensation in Mumbai, giving the world the beloved Vada Pav.
