Cambodian River Cleanup.
Do you know how the Cambodians clean up the Siem Reap River in Cambodia? Watch and see.
The clean-up of the Siem Reap River in Siem Reap, Cambodia, the gateway to Angkor Wat by local Cambodians Images of rubbish and green vegetation on the river, together with Khmers both in the river and on the banks, cleaning the river by hand and using nets.
This river is famous for being the gateway to the Angkor Wat temple complex, one of the world’s largest and most stunning archaeological sites. But it also faces a lot of challenges due to litter and plant regrowth, which can affect its beauty and functionality.
Every year, before the rainy season starts, a team of workers and volunteers use fishing nets and boats to drag the garbage from the river to the land. They also remove the aquatic plants that blanket the entire water surface, causing oxygen depletion and harming the aquatic life. The clean-up project spans from the bridge near the Royal Residence to the bridge near Wat Bo village, covering a distance of 4.6 kms.
The clean-up project aims to prevent flooding in Siem Reap town, restore the river’s natural flow, and enhance its aesthetic appeal. It also helps to protect the environment and the cultural heritage of this ancient city. The project is supported by various organizations, such as the Siem Reap provincial administration, and the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology.
