Learn how to choose a spinning reel for under $100. BoatUS Magazine's fishing editor Lenny Rudow teaches BoatUS Magazines associate editor Charles Fort what's important when choosing a spinning reel to go with his fishing rod. Lenny says that $100 for a reel is tight, but you can certainly get a competent reel for that money, though it won't be the highest quality. There are a few major buying considerations. First, pick up the reel and hold it and give it a spin. You're looking to feel the amount of rotor wobble to get an idea of how well the reel is balanced. Then check for how smooth the bail is to get an idea how smoothly all the parts work together. Third is to spin the drag. Smoother is better. Give it a turn and see if it feels smooth as it goes around. Also check any secondary drags. Also look at the anti-reverse system. See how fast it stops you from spinning the wheel backward. Then make sure the reel is the correct size for the rod and try it for yourself. See what it feels like. Also, don't forget to rinse off the reel every time you use it in saltwater or brackish water.
