Intro 00:00
A digital nomad visa is a visa that is issued to anyone who works remotely and meets the financial requirements to obtain this visa in a given country. Digital nomad visas are usually valid for longer periods to stay in a country than tourist visas, and usually require less paperwork than obtaining a residence permit. For this reason and with the current global boom in remote work, it comes as no surprise to see digital nomad visas being announced in many countries around the world.
01:10 Croatia
Croatia is one of the most popular summer destinations in Europe, and also one of the first countries on the continent to offer a digital nomad visa.
The financial requirement to get the digital nomad visa in Croatia is a remote income of roughly 2300 euros a month. Alternatively, showing that you have 27000 euros in a bank account will also suffice to apply for this digital nomad visa.
Note that you cannot renew this visa immediately, and it is valid for up to 12 months. After that, you will need to leave Croatia for quite a while before you can reapply again. If you are an EU citizen, you will obviously not need any of this since Croatia is a member of the European Union.
Croatia is an excellent place to work remotely in Europe, with a moderate cost of living, and a warmer than average climate when compared to most other countries on the continent.
02:06 Barbados
Barbados is an island country in the Caribbean and also one of the first countries in the world to announce a visa for digital nomads. The program in Barbados is called Barbados Welcome Stamp and it is quite a good option if you want to spend up to 12 months in a Caribbean country and explore the region.
Like in most digital nomads visas, you will not have to pay any income taxes in Barbados during your stay in the country. However, the visa fees are somewhat high, as you will need to spend 2000 USD for a single applicant just to get the visa.
02:48 Estonia
Estonia is another country in the European Union offering digital nomad visas for non-EU citizens. This Baltic country has always been at the forefront of digital technologies, since it launched its famous Estonian e-Residency program.
The income requirement for the Estonian digital nomad visa is a gross monthly income of 3504 euros currently, which is one of the highest income requirements among digital nomad visas currently available.
There are other options to stay in Estonia which I consider more appealing, such as becoming a freelancer.
03:23 Malta
Malta is an island nation in the European Union and the Schengen area which offers, in my opinion, currently the best digital nomad visa in the bloc.
The program in Malta is called Nomad Residence Permit, and as it says it is a residence permit, which is in most cases, better than a visa. In Malta, as long as you meet the requirements, you can keep renewing your stay with the Nomad Residence Permit, thus enjoying the benefits of living in the Schengen area, which Malta is part of.
You will also not be liable for any income tax in Malta if the company paying you is based abroad and the taxes are paid in the origin.
04:07 Dubai
Dubai, which is in the UAE, is another option if you want to live temporarily in a highly interesting location.
The fee for this program is roughly 600 dollars, which is quite inexpensive. However, the financial requirements to enjoy life in Dubai are definitely not low. You will need to show an income of at least 5000 USD per month, which is more than what a good part of digital nomads actually make.
Despite the high financial requirements, this program can actually be a good idea, as I consider Dubai a great place to stay temporarily, but it is probably not the first choice of most digital nomads when they eventually want to settle somewhere.
04:56 Cape Verde
Cape Verde is another interesting option if you want to spend some time in an exotic and interesting destination. Cape Verde is an island nation on the West Coast of Africa.
The application for this digital nomad visa is done online, and the processing time usually takes two weeks.
Cape Verde is an excellent choice if you like warm weather year round and going to the beach a few times a week.
The income requirement is lower than compared to most other digital nomad visas, currently at 1500 euros per month.
05:43 Advantages
Allows you to establish a temporary base
Tax friendly
07:08 Disadvantages
In most cases non-renewable
In many cases you may not work for local clients
It usually does not lead to permanent residency and citizenship
Oftentimes the financial requirement is higher than if you get a self-employment visa
