The Glory of Christ, by John Owen. The following is the preface from his work.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
~ Genesis 1:2-3, John 12:46, John 1:9, John 9:5, John 3:19
When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
~ Proverbs 8:24-31, Psalm 90:2
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
~ Colossians 1:16-17
The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
~ Proverbs 8:22-23, Revelation 13:8
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
~ John 17:24, John 17:14-16, John 17:6, 8-10
If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
~ John 12:26, John 14:3
To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
~ Ephesians 1:6, Ephesians 1:17, Ephesians 1:18
To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
~ Colossians 1:27
He (Christ Jesus) resigned his departing spirit into the hands of his Father, to be owned and preserved by him, in its state of separation: “Father, into thy hinds I commend my spirit,” Luke 23:46; as did the Psalmist, his type, in an alike condition, Ps. 31:5. But the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ herein, – the object and exercise of it, what he believed and trusted unto in this resignation of his spirit into the hand of God, – is at large expressed in the 16th Psalm. “I have,” said he, “set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth; my flesh also shall rest in hope. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
