Driving a Polaris Slingshot around the winding Austin Texas road, where two groups of people tend to full-on stop and stare: children and the elderly. The bright colors and Star Wars pod-racer style of the Slingshot probably explains the first group, but throughout my two-week loaner period, I was consistently surprised at how often senior citizens approached to ask me about the radical three-wheeler in the course of daily life.
To be fair, I spent most of those two weeks conscientiously attempting to daily drive the Slingshot and seeing one in a grocery store parking lot or waiting in traffic typically comes as a surprise to just about everybody—who wouldn't stop to gawk at something so out of the ordinary?
When Polaris offered me a chance to test the 2023 Slingshot, I figured it made sense to go with the range-topping R trim. With heart-attack inducing 203 horsepower under the hood which gets handled with 2L naturally aspirated Polaris engine with a 5 speed transmission. At only 1,650 lbs, oh yeah, this baby moves with brutal acceleration and I like the way she does. It's got the optional auto-drive - remember that from BMW's E46 M3? The Polaris' rear wheel gets its power from a belt drive attached via a swing arm, which is reminiscent of a snowmobile build.
