17th August 2023:
I headed down the Wye Valley again this week, and reached the river’s end at Chepstow, where it joins with the River Severn.
The Severn is crossed by two major road bridges, but only the original one, the Severn Bridge, has a footpath / cycle path, and I rode across that on my Brompton, reaching the English end of the bridge at Aust Services. There is a path on each side of the bridge and both are usually open, although they can sometimes be closed due to high winds or maintenance work. They’re wide enough to take maintenance vehicles, and I saw a few of these during the ride.
There’s a gentle slope up to the bridge’s main towers, but nothing too taxing. What’s more troublesome is the wind and traffic-noise, which are ever-present, and affected the sound quality of the video at some points – so I’ve added a few subtitles where necessary.
It was a very interesting ride, and something I’d wanted to do for quite a while. I just wish I could go up inside one of the bridge’s four main towers, as there must be a fabulous view from way up at the top!
Hope you enjoy the video, and if you are ever in the Chepstow or Aust areas, then I definitely recommend crossing over the bridge – whether on foot or by bike – it’s only a couple of miles each way and the views are superb!
By the way, if you do enjoy it, then please consider subscribing - it really helps me to grow the channel!
