NAVADURGA by GURU GAYATHRI JOSHI and STUDENTS OF IGURUKUL
The dance presentation of Nava Durga showcasing nine forms of cosmic energy represented in Odissi by Guru Smt. Gayatri Joshi and students of IGURUKUL, Bay Area
The Navadurga dance as a sequel, replicated this principle of interchange, coinciding with the month of Navaratri – a celebration of Durga beyond Bengal to other regions in India.
Beyond the mainstream warrior representation and its recent resurgence, Nava Durgas are nine manifestations of Durga’s attributes, depicting her as an ideal than an idol. Durga is shown as the epitome of feminine energy as Shakti that combats negative vices such as arrogance, greed, hatred, and selfishness, for establishing a moral order in society. Different Indian classical dance forms such as Kuchipudi, Bharatnatyam, Mohiniyattam, Odissi and Lavani showed the forms of divine power. The dance used different weapons and objects which stand for different traits and transitions.
According to some Hindu texts such as the Shakta and Vaishnava Puranas, Navaratri theoretically falls twice or four times a year. Of these, the Sharad Navaratri near autumn equinox (September-October) is the most celebrated and the Vasanta Navaratri near spring equinox (March-April) is the next most significant to the culture of the Indian subcontinent. In all cases, Navaratri falls in the bright half of the Hindu luni-solar months. The celebrations vary by region, depending on the creativity and preferences.
