Ashgabat (Aşgabat), the capital city of Turkmenistan, has gained itself a Guinness world record, for having about 80% of its buildings made of white marble, mostly imported from China or Vietnam. Ashgabat overtook Hongkong in 2021 to become the world’s most expensive city. The current president, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, knows Turkmenistan is not a poor country, it has the 6th largest proven natural gas reserves, only ahead of other economic giants like Saudi Arabia, The United States, Qatar and Russia. The country remains one of the most secretive and opaque regimes in history some calling it worse that North Korea. In 1990, country declared independence from the Soviet Union with then-communist leader Saparmurat Niyazov. He made it compulsory to study the "Ruhnama" in schools, universities, and government organizations.
