This 7th Annual Howard University and Georgetown University gathering for educators, librarians, and pre-service teachers took place on April 2, 2022. Howard’s Center for African Studies and School of Education, and Georgetown’s Center for Contemporary Arab Studies feature a workshop on the important topic of teaching about international migration and internal displacement through the lens of people’s experience.
The session featured authors of two award-winning books:
Omar Mohamed, When Stars are Scattered
Omar Mohamed will discuss his graphic novel which provides a child's perspective on life in a Kenyan refugee camp
George Butler, Drawn Across Borders: True Stories of Human Migration
George Butler will discuss his book, a series of remarkable pen-and-ink and watercolor portraits in war zones, refugee camps in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Dr. Rochelle Davis, Institute for the Study of International Migration, Georgetown University
Dr. Davis will discuss teaching about migration in the world today.
The session included discussion of pedagogy and resources for classroom use around the topic of humanizing this widespread global issue.
