The central section of our lesson explains that Christ's death was SUBSTITUTIONARY in that He alone atoned for the sin of all mankind by taking the death penalty upon Himself. We are saved from eternal death by the physical death of Christ—NOT a spiritual death—the penalty of Genesis 2:17 being borne by Him.
