Microsoft Excel Tutorial: The Excel Web App now offers a cool little trick that regular Excel can't do; you can embed a portion of your spreadsheet in a blog or other web page. Here is a challenge to try it out.
Welcome back to another episode of the Learn Excel from MrExcel podcast! In this episode, we will be discussing how to embed an Excel spreadsheet into your blog or website. This is a great way to add interactive content and engage your audience. And to make things even more exciting, we have a challenge for you at the end of this podcast where you can win some cool prizes!
During a visit to Microsoft, I learned about a new feature in Excel web app that allows you to easily embed a spreadsheet into your blog or website. This feature has gone through several updates since its debut in 2010 and it's now easier than ever to create and embed a calculator or other interactive spreadsheet into your online content.
To demonstrate this feature, I have a simple spreadsheet that I used to manage the bid desk for a company. It calculates the impact of offering a 10% discount on sales. I want to embed this spreadsheet into my blog so I can easily access it and show it to my sales manager. To do this, I will first name the range of cells that I want to display. This step is not required, but it will make the process easier.
Next, I will go to File, Save & Send, and then Save to SharePoint. Don't worry if you don't have SharePoint, this is just the only way to access the necessary dialog box. In the Publish Options, I will select "Items in the workbook" and then choose the named range I want to display. After saving the workbook, I will go to SkyDrive.live.com and upload the file. If you're using Excel 2010, you can save directly to SkyDrive, but for older versions, you will need to upload the file manually.
Once the file is uploaded, I will click on "More" and then "Share" to access the embed code. This is where things get a little tricky. You will need to make some changes to the code before embedding it into your blog or website. I have provided a link in the description where you can find instructions on how to modify the code. Once you have made the necessary changes, you can copy and paste the code into your blog or website. Just be sure to save it as a text file and send it to the person responsible for posting it, as copying and pasting directly from an email can cause formatting issues.
Now, it's your turn! We challenge you to come up with a cool application or spreadsheet that you can embed into your blog or website. Upload it to SkyDrive and send us the embed code at consulte@mrexcel.com. We will feature the best submissions on our blog and the winner will receive a prize from the MrExcel store. And stay tuned for our next challenge sponsored by Microsoft, where you can win some amazing Microsoft products.
