Far away in an alternate universe...... Daily Planet reporter, Sharon Carter, is taken hostage by the mutant terrorist known as Hyena, and it's up to Metropolis City's own, Super Soldier, to rescue her. But can the man of war bring the laughing madman to justice, or has Super Soldier's time finally come?
A WORD FROM CHRIS
For those of you who are still scratching your heads, AMALGAM is based on the extremely limited 1996 comic series, where both Marvel and DC merged their respective universes in quite possibly the most epic crossover event in comic book history. I was in middle school at the time, and let me tell you, my mind was blown. Seeing not only Marvel heroes vs DC heroes, but then having them amalgamate to create an entirely new hybrid reality was pure fantasy. It resonated with me on a completely new level and I've never stopped cherishing it.
Now I will admit that back in 2022, I formerly announced my retirement from fan films, due in large to having made so many, that I didn't really think there was much else to do. And considering the dreaded algorithm has done absolutely nothing but bury my channel, I truly felt it was time to move on. But at the behest of one of my comic geek friends, after posting some Amalgam art I was doing out of boredom, it occurred to me that no one, and I do mean NO ONE, has ever done anything with Amalgam Comics since their publication finished.
Ever the egotist, I knew if I was going to return to fan filmmaking, I wanted to continue my streak of being the first at something. Yes, they're fan films, but being the first to make a live action version of something is still a brag, and I'm proud to say I've done a few: Gen¹³, Big Barda, Power Girl, Typhoid Mary, Powdered Toast Man, etc....
AMALGAM was definitely more difficult than I had initially expected. None of my Blinky alum fit the description for Super Soldier, Hyena or Dark Claw, so I had to cast out, and bringing in new people always comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to coordinating schedules.
When you have a budget, people are on your time, and it's awesome. Things get done when you want them. But when you're doing a no budget fan film, you're at the mercy of everyone else. Now don't get me wrong, I am so grateful for everyone who donates their time to act in my shorts, but when schedules don't align, things always get pushed back, sometimes far beyond what you originally intended.
But two long months after first writing the script, AMALGAM was finally ready to film. Apart from some technical issues with how my camera processed the lighting, day one went off without a hitch. Day two on other hand, not so much. My first challenge was learning that ALL of Paul (Lex Luthor) Zawadsky's calls & text were somehow blocked on my phone, which was really weird, considering I never blocked him. Unfortunately, that did not matter and he was never able to contact me. So when I finally called him the day before the shoot to confirm, he thought I had been blowing him off and instead took on another job. Since it was too late to switch around his schedule, I had to cancel and push filming back by a week. That's when my second challenge arrived.
The night before filming, my actor playing Dark Claw told me he had come down with a virus and was bed ridden. Try as he might, he did not believe he was going to be able to make it to filming. Thankfully, Dark Claw's interactions with everyone else were incredibly limited, so I was able to shoot around it. The plan was to just film Dark Claw's coverage separately, then edit it in later. This brings me to challenge three.
After a week with no changes to his health, I was forced to recast Dark Claw. It was not something I wanted to do, nor was it something I took lightly, but filming was already behind by two weeks, and I could not continue to wait indefinitely. Thankfully, Chris Moss was able to effortlessly step into the role, and what a lifesaver he was.
AMALGAM is definitely a labor of love. There is absolutely no way I could've done it without the support of my fan base, and those who donated their time and money to the project. Because you, this little short film exists, and I am so very grateful. Thank you for helping me entertain you.
