The Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir emerged as the main architect of the violent protests in Bangladesh. The allegedly 'Pakistan-backed' outfit has been accused of orchestrating the violence that led to Hasina’s downfall. Now, days after Hasina’s exit, Jamaat Ameer called for the immediate establishment of a government. Founded in 1975, Jamaat-e-Islami is one of the largest 'Islamist parties' in Bangladesh.
The group was founded by Sayyid Abul A’la Maududi, a figure associated with the Muslim Brotherhood. Earlier the Jamaat-e-Islami was allied with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, another of Hasina's opposition. In 2013, the radical wing was banned from participating in Bangladesh national elections. The Sheikh Hasina government had officially designated Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing 'terrorists.'
