While on an Alaska trip with two of my best friends, to visit my family. We encountered the most insane thing! There was a beached Orca near our family home that had been caught on the outgoing tide. I saw some seals swimming around this island, so I assume she must have been hunting and got caught on the outgoing tide.
NOAA gave permission to use a water hose to keep the Orca wet and protected from animals. While we were trying to get the pump to work, we used buckets to cool the animal down and hydrate her. We could tell after the first bucket, that she felt relieved. Once the hose started working, we stopped using the buckets.
After NOAA arrived, everyone left and allowed them to takeover. Once high tide came in, after the whale was beached for about 6 hours, the whale swam off. NOAA says they followed her out, until she dove back down, and she was reunited with her pod!
They say this Orca is from a pod known as "Biggs."
We are all so grateful that she made it, and a few of us even shed a tear. This was truly an incredible experience that we will never forget and are overwhelmed with the amazing response from everyone around the world!
