NRIs across the United States are facing difficulties to buy rice at local Indian stores. There are purchase restrictions and prices have surged as top exporter India banned export of ‘Non-Basmati White Rice’. Government of India has amended the Export Policy of Non Basmati White Rice from ‘Free with export duty of 20%’ to ‘Prohibited’. The step has been taken to ensure adequate availability of Non Basmati White Rice in the Indian market. One of NRIs, Aruna said that she bought a rice bag at triple the price.
Wholesaler of rice in Baltimore, Tarun Sardana also predicted that this shortage will continue for the next few weeks. India has taken this step to ensure adequate domestic supply, and bring down prices, soaring due to excess rains. According to government data, the domestic price of non-basmati rice has increased by almost 10 per cent this month.
