Legend of Bandits in Warring States 1937
Directed by Takizawa Eisuke
The time of the story was around 1550, era of provincial wars. Between the two strong powers of Hojo and Uesugi, a small lord called Toki was placed themselves under the Hojo government. Subordinate lords must pay the military money to the upper government. The bandits aimed the money.
It is said the script of this movie was written by director Yamanaka Sadao under the name of Kajiwara Kinpachi, which was common pen name of Narutaki-gumi, a group of script writers, consisting of 8 directors and script writers.
Kurosawa Akira joined the production as the second director, his experience on the film said influenced on his wartime movies including Seven Samurais.
Later, in 1959, Kurosawa rewrote the script and director Sugie Toshio remade the film. You might have watched it in the name “Saga of the Vagabonds”. In this new version you can see many well-known actors such as Mifune Toshiro and Shimura Takashi.
The title of this 1937 version is Maya's translation (I didn't know the 1959 version).
