Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg is located in the former East Berlin, and was founded during the Industrial Revolution when the population of Berlin doubled and workers required accommodation. Over 80% of all housing in the area was constructed before 1948, and the oldest surviving building – at 77 Kastanienallee – was built in 1848. Most of its buildings survived the war, so you will still find here the charm of 19th Century Altbau.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall, many squatters and young bohemians were attracted to the area, making Prenzlauer Berg an artist hub and home to many clubs and bars. In the ensuing years, many of the buildings were sold to private investors who renovated them, eventually transforming the area into what it is today: one of the most family-friendly neighbourhoods in Berlin, famous for its organic markets, parks, and hip cafes.
Prenzlauer Berg possesses a balance of high class chic and a touch of the bohemian, and is many people’s first choice of neighbourhood in which to raise a family within central Berlin.
