Local Muslims gathered at the Brooklyn Park Community Activity Center to celebrate Eid-al-Adha, also known as the Feast of the Sacrifice, one of the most important Islamic holidays.
Members of the Masjid al–Ansar congregation were supposed to hold their festival and prayer outside the Brooklyn Park Community Activity Center, but had to move inside because of the rain Thursday morning.
"I was here early this morning, begging them to get us this place," said Amara Kamara, one of the festival organizers. "I can't thank the city enough for helping us out."
There were two services Thursday morning with at least 400 people at each one.
"We have thousands of Muslims not just from West Africa but from all over the world that live in Brooklyn Park," said Imam Mohammed Dukly with the Masjid al-Ansar Islamic Center. "They all came here to pray today."
The local Masjid al–Ansar congregation is working on getting a permanent place to pray and is currently renting space out of an office building in Brooklyn Center. Members are holding a fundraiser dinner this Saturday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m. at Osseo High School.
