Bewildered prisoners crept from one of the world’s most notorious prisons on December 9, 2024, following the collapse of the Syrian government under Bashar al-Assad. Human rights groups estimated that about 130,000 prisoners had been held in Sednaya prison, 30km (19 miles) north of the capital Damascus. The prison has been linked to disappearances, torture and mass executions since the country fell into a brutal civil war in 2011.
