I was in a walk with my dog, who was under my control and leashed. These two people had their off leash aggressive dog in the local field where people walk dogs and where small children play. The dog charged my dog and so I pepper sprayed it with a K9 deterrent pepper spray, I ended up unloading the entire canister into the attacking dogs face before the dog fully bailed on the attack and the owners restrained their dog. Thanks to the spray the dog quickly bailed once the burn set in. My dog was unharmed thanks to that. The dog that was sprayed will also be okay since the spray is specifically designed for dogs and dog attacks and can easily be washed off with soap and water.
My dog did nothing to contribute or to trigger the attack, all she did was give out a scared bark when the dog was about to make contact. My dog was under my control and trained (she was originally a service animal but had to retire due to her fear of large vehicles and loud noises)
I did not see the dog until it was too late, when I saw the dog wasn’t stopping I ended up spraying it. Leash your dogs before they get shot, sprayed, tased, or hit by a car. Other people in the same area moments before carry firearms and if the dog attacked them the dog would have been, without a doubt, shot and killed.
In a dog attack with an off leash dog, do not pull your dog away or drag your dog by the collar or leash, instead try to control the attacking dog but if the attacking dog can hurt you, then call emergency services, and carry self defense equipment on you.
